Storytime in New Orleans
November 11, 2008
This month's theme is all about books, books and more books. For today's list I have compiled a handful of bookstores, storytimes and attractions that bring words to life for your preschooler.
Storytimes
- The Main Library (219 Loyola Ave.) hosts Kid Jam Time every Thursday at 10:30 am in the Children's Room. This activity is free and open to children up to five-years-old. Activities include storybooks, fingerplays, nursery rhymes, songs and giveaways.
- The Children's Resource Center (913 Napoleon Avenue) hosts storytime for preschoolers and kindergarteners at 10:30 every Wednesday. This is geared towards kids ages three and up. Call first for arrangements (504-596-2628).
- The lovely Latter Branch of the New Orleans Library System hosts storytime in the pink room at 10:30 am. In addition to a great children's section, this library sits on a large grassy lawn perfect for outdoor reading and running off some extra energy.
- The Children's Bookshop (7523 Maple Street), the pintsize version of the Maple Street Bookshop, offers weekly storytimes every Saturday at 11 am. Local librarians, storytellers and teachers stop in to entertain your preschooler for free. Open to kids of all ages.
- I know I've mentioned it before but I am smitten with Storyland at City park. It's a great place to bring the tykes and let them step inside some of their favorite tales and nursery rhymes. Admission is only $3 per person and kids under 2 are free.
- Blue Cypress Books with it's new storefront at 8126 Oak Street offers a small but welcoming children's section with kid-sized chairs for leafing through gently used books.
- Octavia Books (513 Octavia Street) has a nice children's section as well and offers seasonal storytimes. Check their website for upsdates.
